Search engines & link previews

Every page of your site tells search engines and chat apps what it is — without you doing anything. When Google crawls a page, or someone pastes your link into Slack, WhatsApp or X, they get that page's own title, description and preview image, not a generic placeholder.

What every site gets automatically

  • A real title per page — the one you (or the AI) gave the page, not the site's name repeated everywhere. It's also what shows in the browser tab.
  • A description per page — the sentence under the title in a search result. If you haven't written one, a sensible description is taken from the page's own text.
  • Social previews — pasting a link anywhere shows a proper card: title, description and, if the page has one, a picture.
  • A sitemap at your-site.startupjs.ai/sitemap.xml, listing your pages so search engines can find them all.
  • A robots.txt that invites search engines in and points them at your sitemap.

Nothing needs turning on, and this works the same on your own domain.

Writing better titles and descriptions

Titles and descriptions belong to pages, so you change them the way you change everything else — by asking:

Ask the AI Builder

"Give every page a short, specific title and a one-sentence description written for someone seeing it in Google."

"The workshops page description should say we run small pottery classes in Lisbon on weekends."

"Use the big studio photo as the link preview image for the home page."

Good descriptions are one sentence, specific, and written for a stranger — "Handmade ceramics from a small Lisbon studio, fired weekly" beats "Welcome to our website".

The SEO panel in your admin

The Routes page of your admin panel has a column called What search engines see: for every page, the exact title and description that get delivered, with a warning chip when something's missing — no title, no description, no social image, or two pages sharing the same title. A banner appears if your site has no home page at all.

At the bottom is a button: Improve my site's SEO. It hands the whole report to the AI Builder as one request — it goes through every page, writes the missing titles and descriptions, and tells you what it changed in the chat. Like any build request, it uses AI credit.

Good to know

  • Changes are live immediately. The moment the AI saves a page, its title, description and preview change with it — no rebuild, no publish step.
  • Search engines take their time. Google re-crawls on its own schedule, usually days to weeks; the sitemap helps it find new pages sooner. Nothing you can do here is instant.
  • Chat apps cache previews. If you fix a picture and re-paste the link, you may still see the old card for a while — that's Slack/WhatsApp holding a copy, not your site.
  • The title, description and preview travel with the page itself, so they work even for tools that never run your site's code — which is exactly the case for most link-preview fetchers.
  • Preview images can be an image you uploaded or a link to one; keep it under 5 MB or it's skipped.
